A few weeks ago I started playing on
itsyourturn.com. It's a website with generic versions of simple abstract games like chess, othello, backgammon, battleships, scrabble, etc. There's a fairly large number of variants of each game, and some tournament-like ladders for many game variants. I like variants, they keep me from being bored. All games are against other humans (these aren't single player games).
Up front: You can only make 15 moves each day as an unpaid user. A subscription is about $3 per month. The site is set up to play much like play-by-email, but it's quite reasonable to finish a game quickly (i.e. close to a normal amount of time for a synchronous game) if both players are online and active at the same time. (And yes, you need to make an account to play, but that only makes sense.)
I enjoyed myself quite a bit playing free for weeks, and finished a number of games that way (including several on a dark chess ladder, where you can't see opponent's pieces unless they are in a spot your pieces could move to). At this point I've decided to actually pay for the service, and a few of my other friends are on there, and all this combined means I'm willing to pimp the site a little and seek some more vict... er, people to play with.
Here's the top
help page, and if you want to find me and play a game against me, here's my
profile page. (Yes, I've done quite badly at competitive ladder games so far. Ah, well.)
Game on.
