I had not been intending to go to Gencon this year (and still won't), but were I going as an attendee, I would surely have have joined this
Guild Wars Sealed Deck event. (They don't call it Sealed Deck, but I sure do.)
The essence is this: It's 4v4. Each team is given a set of 64 randomized skill cards to build their team.
Things you might not know about Guild Wars:
- In general, you can only have eight skills equipped at a time on a character. So a four man team will only use up 32 of the skills.
- There's eight classes (aka professions). So that's probably eight skills per class in the skill pool to choose from.
- Each character has two classes, a primary and a secondary class. Particularly relevant here (and in brief) is that primary skills perform better than secondary skills in many cases, and your primary class determines your armor and energy regeneration (so Warrior/Necromancers get good armor and lousy energy, but Necromancer/Warriors are the other way around).
I think that makes things quite interesting. It's unlikely that the best builds will be characters that ignore their secondary classes and just use all eight of the skills for their class. So that means you are trying to find the four best primary/secondary combinations for the 64 skills available. This further means that unless you use every single class in your pairings, some characters will be overlapping (for instance, two Warriors on the team) which means you have to divvy up the skills for that class between your players.
The sheer number of legal possibilities is enormous, but even the viable options are going to be beyond comprehension in a quick period of time.
I hope they list the skill pool after or during the event, so we can all play along at home.
