Over near my mum's place they still have hard rubbish collections (This is ominous, isn't it?) and recently when we went to visit, lots of stuff was out on nature strips. This is usually a great way of getting an ancient 386, with no memory or hard drives, but this time I got a Celeron with no memory or hard drive.
A stick of pc 100 memory from a mate, an old 3 gig second or third hand hard drive and it works. Now to sort out my disks, 3.5 floppy and shiny 12 cm, over Easter and install my actually legal copy of win 98, drag the spare keyboard, mouse and monitor out of the garage and we have another system. Then I can run my games and hopefully printer/scanner.
Much as i like Ubuntu Linux, I cannot get my printer to work with it. The up to date Edgy Eft distro I run on this system does great Firefox and can play DivX (OK, I have some Torchwood and Heroes), so we are all happy. Still learning about Linux, but it actually seems easier to work with than Windows--this probably is because i have all the bits of the operating system in one place. I seem to have a problem keeping the Cd copy, startup floppy and documentation with numbers for Windows all in the same place. Of course I still think like an Amiga fiend and I do miss the instant start up into Basic of our old friend The Commodore 64. (Just got a version of breakout for Linux--love that game.)
Looking forward to Easter, even though I cannot eat chocolate and am a Buddhist. Not a very good buddhist, but trying.
Jocko.
