Hello, Winter

Oh, Minnesota.

I'm not sure exactly how much snow we got out here in Greenfield, but it looks like at least a foot. Some of the drifts are significantly higher -- high enough that my dogs, when they jump gleefully into them, vanish from view entirely for a moment. Then they surge back out the other side, barking loudly, and stand there all puffed up with pride at having... I don't know. Defeated winter? Taken out a snow drift? Managed to cover themselves in snow from nose to tail? Who knows what goes on in their furry little heads.

At any rate, there are at least two creatures in Minnesota who have experienced unalloyed pleasure and joy at the snow. I have to say, I am a little joyful about it. I had fun yesterday romping around in the snow with the dogs, and now that the sun is out and the wind has died down, we are being treated to a stunningly beautiful view of winter, all white snow and blue shadows and bright golden sun.

That said, I have been outside only very briefly today, to un-stick the sliding door. I'm going to the roller derby with snurri tonight and that means that at some point I'll have to venture out and dig out my car. I unearthed it once yesterday, so I have only the accumulation of last night to remove, but based on my brief time outside I think it's safe to say that in addition to being beautiful outside, it is also breathtakingly cold.

But it has been a very nice weekend, despite (and maybe also because of) the weather. Friday I went out with Maria and we had a really nice dinner at the Birchwood, and last night I curled up on the couch with some hot chocolate and had a Skype crafting session with Catherine, one that we resumed for an hour or so this afternoon. Her early Christmas present to me was this gorgeous felt ornament kit, and she and I worked on the snowy tree ornaments for quite a while together when I was down there in November. I hadn't touched them since, but I managed to get quite a bit more done last night and this afternoon, and I am almost done with the tree. My blanket stitching leaves much to be desired in spots, but it looks okay from a distance.
