My Mum took 5 years off work for both me and my sister i.e. until we went to school and she says she wouldn't change a thing. Sure, they had to struggle financially, they never had a big house and their car was a banger, but she got to spend lots of time with us, and made sure that we were brought up the way she wanted. As far as she was concerned, her home life was far more important than her work life, so she didn't see it as a sacrifice. On the other hand, there was a news story recently about a French MP who went back to work a couple of days after giving birth and got straight back on with helping to run the country. She said that she was more than happy to make this choice and didn't see what all the fuss was about.

You have to make the decisions that are right for you and not compare yourself to anyone else. If part time is the way you want to play it, then go for it, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I don't see why working part time doesn't mean that you're not giving 100% when you *are* there. In fact, I bet you'll be working twice as hard and will be much more organised that the guys with the full week to get their stuff done, and hopefully this will not go unnoticed!

You're right though - in a short time life is going to change drastically, and things might seem a bit more black and white once the little one is here. I know you're going to make the right decisions and be a great Mum, whatever else life may throw at you! :-)

I think going part time for a few months is a compromise, but I also think it's the best available option. We'll see how it goes in any case.
