Cleaning house, shifting gears, and mixing metaphors...

Sorry for all of the wonderful news I missed, or congrats and condolences that I thought for you but never wrote. What a week month fall (and summer)...

Out with the old, in with the new!

Didja know that teachers can just call in a sub? Magic! Which I have never done -- until this week. It became obvious to me (aaaaand a few colleagues) that I had a nasty case of sickness which probably boiled down to plain overexhaustion. So, taking some earnest advice, I took off two days, anxious the whole time, but mostly napping and reminding myself what my husband looks like again.

I'm still sick (I maaaaay have gone back to work too soon), but I feel great. Weird, huh? Two days off from that noble career and those delightful kids that I theoretically love has been enough to leave me in an unconquerably good mood the rest of the week.

Let's not examine the implications of that too closely. I went into a lot of debt to get this job.

Election! I voted (and did a tiny bit of work, God knows when) for Romney and a few other campaigns. And I know, I know, I'm supposed to be soul-searching while crawling under my slimy rock where I melt down my evil Republican gold into "Amnesty" medals in a last craven attempt to pander for votes as the nation's demographics inexorably slip away or, well, something.

Except I'm not quite as much a party hack (though I am, a little ;) as a classical liberal. And, as far as I can see, classical liberalism is dead. Sociopolitical gravity will down run the US no matter what anyone does. Toothpaste isn't going back inside the tube. Now we're just arguing about what patterns to make on the sink. You guys do what you want.

Does that sound extreme? It makes me the ideal opposition, at least. No regrets. And my sole, heartfelt reaction: God bless America, God bless Americans, and God bless the president. Good luck with that agenda.* I'm a twentysomething amateur historian; I could so easily be wrong about everything. Hope I am!

*(And yes, that good luck is even mostly for you, you crazy-ass sclerotic Senate, you. OUR crazy-ass sclerotic Senate, at least. #patriotism)

And, in the meantime, I now have a lot of extra heart, and a little time, to give to other things, now that I no longer care about federal politics. (Great feeling, that: to have more of yourself to give.)

So, this 100 Things thing (that some of you are doing so awesomely). I've been wanting to do it for a while now. Someone please mock me if I don't start next weekend.

The plan is to divide it into decades so I do 10 posts at a time on 10 topics. First topic is teaching life, because teaching is about all I do or think of lately, but also because then I'll be forced to stop after 10 posts. Maybe 20. You all will have had enough, I promise. ;)

Before so doing, it's time to go to friends-only because, dear God, the spam. (No, I don't want cute Uggs, whatever Uggs are.) Do you folks all make your own banners for the friends-only sticky post? Or is there a place where they give these away for nothing but due credit and link-back?

(Someone on my flist had an adorable Big Bang Theory banner of Leonard and Penny being all mostly-friends-only... can't seem to find it to link to now. One of the cutest things I ever saw on LJ, and that's saying a lot. ♥)

all right now, i can haz rl?, jolly beggary
