Thoughts on Season 4 of AtS

Our fate has to be our own, or we're nothing.
- Angel

So, being sick home with a cold, I was re-watching parts of 4, and in ‘Supersymmetry’, and it appears that Cordelia is still herself. She feels the wrongness of kissing Conner. She feels her friendship with Angel even though she doesn’t remember. She appears to be working through things and honestly seeking answers.

In the next episode, ‘Spin the Bottle‘, she still appears to be honestly confused. Yet, in the very next episode she sleeps with Conner, which IMO Cordelia would never do - even if the world was ending.

Also, in “Awakening”, I think it’s the Beast talking when Cordelia tells Angel she supports his decision to not bring Angelus back. Cordelia would be willing to do whatever it takes - even bringing Angelus back. However, it’s in the Beast’s best interest not to bring Angelus back of course.

So, what do you think? Somewhere between “Supersymmatry” and “Spin the Bottle”? Or do you think it was before? Or after?
When exactly did the Beast take her over?

That said, what about season 4 in general?
This season has its critics and fans.

So, how do fans feel about season 4? Personally, I think it’s stronger then fans give it credit for, having watched it yet again. Sure, it’s got its flaws - The Beast is absurdly lame - but this season has got its strengths, too. I love Cordelia/Angel in this season. Talk about angst! And I love the Jasmine arc. An interesting commentary on the destructive force that is organized religion. Conner’s monologue in "Peace Out" is in my opinion, one of the best in the entirety of both series;

…and it is better. Not harsh and cruel, the way that Angel likes it so that he has a reason to fight. ‘cause you know that’s what he’s about, him and the others, finding reasons to fight. Like - like that’s what gives their lives any meaning. The only damn thing! I’m not like them. I just…wanna stop. Stop fighting. I just want to rest. God, I wanna rest…I know she’s a lie. Jasmine. My whole life’s been built on them. I just - I guess I thought this one was better than the others.

Reminds you of Spike’s speech in "Beneath You", doesn’t it?

Conner’s pain is evident, and during this lament, I almost feel sorry for him. He did really love Cordelia, and truly felt betrayed by her.
And don’t think that the importance of this scene taking place in a church is lost on me. Buffy/Angel has it’s fair share of noteworthy scenes that happen in churches.

I think that the reason why fans hate this season is because it’s so dark.

I’d like to know from you all this; if you dislike this season, why? Do you think the writing is weak? The plot boring? Too dark? Lame? Or some other reason?
