They fuck. Like always. It’s quick and hard and they hurt each other a little bit. Jo doesn’t come and Sam doesn’t seem to care.
They get up. Like always. She packs their duffels while Sam takes the first shower and he makes the bed and pretends not to notice her red eyes when she steps from hers.
They have breakfast. Like always. Jo gets the special and Sam gets coffee. He dumps in a heap of sugar and a big dollop of cream, but lets it grow cold between his hands as he sits back and watches her chew. She mops up the last of the egg yolk with a piece of toast and he motions the waitress for the check.
They head out. Like always. Sam turns on the stereo before he starts the car and Jo hums along to the nameless tune. She straightens out the map, tells Sam 300 miles and stares out the window as the black car sails sweetly over the tarmac.
They don’t mention the date. Like always. But Sam kisses her before he rolls away and goes to sleep and that’s a first.
