Well, how else would you suggest he figure out which one is the evil shape-shifting alien and which is the pet, or hapless crew member? They don't exactly go around introducing themselves and handing out a list of their nefarious plans.

There are ways to force shapeshifters to change. It doesn't require an act of intimacy. And if the animal is talking anyway, what could you possibly learn from a meld that you couldn't learn from listening to the beast?

Sure we do. If you force a shapeshifter to change and it doesn't change, it's not a shapeshifter. And if it's a crewmember, if they're capable of talking then they're capable of turning themselves back into what they were before.
