Joanna McCoy-7

Joanna didn't know what was going on. The ground was shaking like it had when she was little and Mama brought her to Disneyland after she made Daddy go away. Somehow Disneyland was supposed to make it okay she sent Daddy away and Joanna wouldn't get to see him again. It didn't work. She wasn't stupid after all. She loved her Daddy, and she got why Daddy was sad even if Mama didn't. Daddy loved Paw-Paw like she loved Daddy. She'd been real sad when Daddy went away and she knew Daddy was alive. Paw-Paw was dead so Daddy wouldn't ever get to see him again.

The ground shouldn't be shaking though. This was Georgia not California...although sometimes she wished it was California. Then she could run away and see her Daddy. It was shaking so bad she'd fallen out of her tree and she hadn't done that since she was real little. Now her pants were all torn up and her hands and knees were scraped and Daddy wasn't around to kiss it better. Mama wouldn't. Mama said she was getting too big to have her wounds kissed better. She didn't get it. Daddy did, but Daddy went to school to learn how to kiss it better real good. She'd tried to tell the judge that she needed her Daddy but Mama's dumb butt lawyer made it sound like Daddy was making her say that, twisting her words and making her out to be a liar. She didn't lie! Last time she'd lied she'd had to write a whole page of "I will not tell lies" That had made her arm ache bad. And Daddy had had to have a long talk about why lying was something you didn't do and it'd made Daddy real disappointed. Not that he said that but she could tell. Besides, she was a McCoy and you didn't get to tell them what to do, even if Mama's boyfriend tried. But he was a stupid Yank so what did he know? He tried to be her Daddy and called Daddy names. Daddy was the best doctor in the world and all Mama's boyfriend was was some bank thingy.

She wanted to run for the house but she was scared she'd fall down and she already hurt. She was also maybe a little scared too.

"Jo-Jo!" she had to have hit her head. A concussion, like in Daddy's books 'cause that sounded an awful lot like Daddy. She really wanted Daddy.

"Over here!" she called back anyway. Daddy would fix this, even if it was an imaginary Daddy. But Daddy was real and he was hugging her supertight and wearing a real Starfleet uniform.

"Baby-girl, I need you to hold onto me real tight okay?" Daddy ordered.

"What's going on?" Jo demanded holding his hand supertight even though it made the scratches hurt like the dickens.

"The Earth is going away," Daddy explained. "Two to beam up!"

"But it's Earth, it can't go away," Joanna said bewildered.

"Bad men did it," Daddy told her.

"You're going to stop it, right?" Joanna asked. "And make them not do that no more?"

"We're going to try," Daddy promised as they dematerialized and rematerialized into chaos on a platform.

backstory, starfleet, daddy is awesome, jo-jo
