Jo's Survival Tip of the Day: Telling Water Moccasins from Other Water Snakes;

Most of the time when I ask someone if they know how to tell the difference, they say;
 "Well, the Water Moccasin has all white on the inside of it's mouth..."

Well yea, it does... but how many of you are retarded enough to go up to a fucking suspected cottonmouth and ask it if you can take a look in it's mouth? If they are on land, the mouth coloration is pretty much the only way to tell unless you're a herpetologist - but if they're in the water, you have the advantage.....

Because, dear children - there is a better way - as long as the snake is in water. Cottonmouths are semi-aquatic, meaning that they spent almost their entire lives in or close to water.

Telling a (water-borne) Cottonmouth from a common water snake lies in the way it swims. Cottonmouths move in the water in a very ominous and methodical way, swimming with their entire bodies above the water;

<- Cottonmouth.

Common water snakes on the other hand tend to either swim completely submerged or, more commonly, with body submerged and just the tip of the head protruding from the water.

Under lake - just a snake... Above the waters - grab your daughters.
