Jo's survival tip of the day: Field Expedient Covers:
Cover, headgear, hat, whatever you want to call it - remember that you lose the vast majority of your body heat through the top of your head. In a cold environment if you are caught without one, fear not, you are not fucked.
1) Take a dew rag, terry cloth, tear a piece of material out of something, car seat cover - whatever. Tear it into a large square - by large I mean 3-4 square feet.
2) Fold it into a triangle, diagonalwise and tie the two top corners together.
3) Collect up as much soft brush, grass, foliage, hay, straw, feathers etc as you can find and stuff them inside your triangle liberally - you want it thick, like an inch or so, but not so thick that it will start to make the dew rag unfoldable.
4) Put your fore-head on the flat bottom edge of the rag, kneeling to it like a Muslim in prayer, touching your face to the ground. Carefully flip the top corner of the triangle over the back of your head and then tie the other two corners tightly (tight enough to keep the insulation in but not tight enough to interfere with your temporal artery).
5) You will now look like someone with a really swollen, lumpy fucking head wearing a shitty bandanna. But you will significantly stem the flow of heat loss from your body.
