I understand the theory that texting allows for instantaneous communication. Unfortunately it doesn't work in South Devon.

Here you have to leave the house and go on a daily ten minute walk to the top of a hill to get a signal allowing you to receive and send messages.

This makes it approximately as efficient as a PO Box.
