The Black Squirrel

Okay, I freely admit this is mostly about having dug up my old digital camera and making sure it still works.  Nevertheless, I find the Black Squirrel kind of interesting.  Have a look:




I've lived in and around Chicago for most of my life.  And every squirrel I've ever seen around here has been the usual gray model, seen above in the upper left at the base of the tree.  However, this last few months, I've seen The Black Squirrel, visible at the far right, prowling around.  He (or she, perhaps) is maybe a little bigger than his contemporaries, but otherwise acts the same as any other squirrel.

But I've never seen one with that coloration, at least not around here.  It makes me curious.  Is this an immigrant from distant shores?  Some kind of freak mutation?  What's the deal with the Black Squirrel, and why is there only one?

These are the things I think about sometimes.
