I went home for the weekend to see my little brother. He just got home from his second tour in Iraq. I have to say that this is the first time in YEARS since I've seen him this emotionally healthy. I was surprised, actually. I think it as a lot to do with the fact that he only as 7 months left in the marines and he has a good girl on his arm, which he deserves. Seriously good to see him smiling. He even hugged my of his own volition, which I think is a first since we were in high school.
While I was home (it's always so therapeutic for me) I got to just hang out with my family. I know everyone thinks this about their family, but MY family really is the best. While we were eating dinner on Sunday night, everyone was talking at once and passing dishes around. It was noisy and busy and amazingly beautiful. I sat there and watched them all laughing and things just sort of slowed down for me in that moment. My family is comprised of the most caring, devoted, loyal, funny, and loving people I've ever had the pleasure to know. They're all my friends and I don't think it was an accident that I ended up with them here in this mortal existence.
And then today I went on a 27 mile bike ride around the lake with some family members. It was difficult not only because of the steep terrain, but it was about 30 degrees and snowing. We were all so tired and drained but we finally made it home with smiles on our faces. My mom made us lunch and we all crashed. I'm glad I have the memories of this weekend. I love my family. I didn't want to leave.
