Bars full of old sourdoughs afraid of having their guns taken away. Then I went another hour past that town deeper into the woods and mountains on a tiny mud road.

Found the only sage clearing in the region. Wires, pipes, strange plastic suitcases all put together in the ground to collect data. It looks just like complex explosives from movies. I wore my orange hunting cap as even remote as we were I still heard some far off gun shots. Two small planes flew overhead during the day. Again, a bit afraid they had trigger happy occupants that wouldn't hesitate to shoot me from the air under any number of imagined pretext. I always imagine myself dying so clearly at the most random of times.

Went to craters of the moon later. Sputtering lava formations frozen in place, part of the hotspot that makes Yellowstone. Then went down towards SLC. Southern Idaho by Preston is almost an exact match for Bakersfield. Mormons and Mexicans. Farmlands and mountains.
