Well yeah, that makes sense. The one I would be buying has "Hypersim" card and I thought it's a card where you can attach your normal SIM, but I'm not sure yet.

I know that when my husband was in Korea he had no problem using his phone :D So, if you get one, it might still work outside Japan.
many new japanese phones are built to work worldwide, as all (?) carriers also offer worldwide travel plans (docomo's should be world wing, right?). so technically no problem there. the SIM lock is what will give you trouble, as they lock the phone's menu as well. so even if the hypersim enables your phone to work with your local SIM, the menu might still be blocked.
the situation is pretty tricky, even in japan - afaik there is no way to use a docomo model with a softbank SIM for example. the government recently started thinking about ways to change that, but it's still a long way to go until then.
