Pink Hair and the Popped Collar Phenomenon

So.. "O-Week" is underway and I've had such a great time so far. My O-group's color is hot pink, and I was mobbed by Damion, one of my O-group leaders, during the Barbie with pink hair dye. So..  for the first time in my life.. I had pink hair! Lucky for me.. it washed out =)

Sunday night after the Barbie, we had the Bush Dance, which is essentially an Outback Aussie Hoe Down. I had sooo much fun! I have to say.. I’m not too shabby on the dance floor, at least..  in the bush-dance sense ;o)  It might help that I was one of only a few sober people.  Several line dances, square dances, and dances that I don’t even know the name for b/c they were so strange. I learned a few aussie-songs too, although I don’t know what they were called. (they had motions though!)  I think dancing should be a new weight loss strategy!.. It’s pretty tiring after 4 hours!!

So.. when I was getting ideas of what “bush” folk would wear..  it sounded a lot like a cowboy/cowgirl motif. One thing they said though took me by surprise.. “pop your collar!”  Apparently..  the popped collar look is a sure sign that your from the country or rural parts of Australia, b/c  they would do it to keep their neck from burning in the sun. So funny to me.. b/c at JMU, the “prep”  kids or sorority/fraternity kids will pop their collar for unknown reasons. Is suppose they think it’s cool. I think the popped collar look is pretty forgivable when you have a good excuse like the avoidance of sunburn.

Last night I went out to Brighton Beach with everyone from the Hall. I didn’t go swimming, but I did play a bit of soccer and volley ball. I watched cricket, but I still don’t understand it. Maybe one day before I leave I’ll learn to play.. or at least watch enough to understand it.  Came back and watched a movie with Cindy, Heidi, Gerry, Candace, and a few others that I just met..

Miss ya’ll back home!!

Love,   Bethany
