I love New York in June, how about you? Of course, that fact is irrelevant considering I was just out there and it’s actually October, so never mind. I’m back from a week in the Big Apple, and it’s been an experience. Staying at a nice place just the right side of Daredevil’s Hell’s Kitchen turf, I had a day or so to do some un-work stuff - including getting a shiny new netbook/tablet and visiting sites like the NYPD Museum and the Skyscraper Museum. But the main reason I was there was to work, and that entailed a whole bunch of meetings with editors at different publishing houses, discussing future projects for new works of both tie-in and original nature. It’s early days yet, but some cool stuff came up; I can say no more for now.
I rounded out the trip with four days of madness at the New York Comic Con; this was my first US comics event, and I was blown away not only the size of the thing (with its massive halls and sold-out 75,000+ attendees) but also by the sheer amount of swag and merch on sale there. It was a good thing I brought an extra bag. Sadly, the huge crowds meant I didn’t get into some of the panels and seminars I wanted to, and there was a tendency to get swamped or sidetracked, but it was dazzling, foot-aching four days of concentrated nerdcore which spilled over into the city itself.
I also got to hang out with some of my Star Trek writer homies - Marco Palmeri, David Mack, Chris Bennett, Kevin Dilmore, Keith DeCandido, Peter David, Glenn Haumann and Robert Greenberger. We
signed books, we drank beer and ate steaks, we bitched and cursed, and it was swell. I also hooked up with my Black Library colleague
Dan Abnett for a signing at the Games Workshop store in Greenwich Village, where we were made very welcome by manager Ian McDonald and his staff - Dan and I were given brilliant gifts of
hand-made purity seals and plushies, both of which now grace the wall-o’-stuff in my office. Shout-out’s too to Kyle, JJB, Johnny and the rest of the Eidos Montreal and Square Enix crew, who were at NYCC promoting our new DLC mission pack for Deus Ex: Human Revolution, “The Missing Link”, which incidentally goes on sale today for download via Steam, Xbox Live and Playstation Network.
Other highlights of NYCC for me included meeting some of the Marvel Comics team (whereupon I did geek mightly), getting to karate-punch a helicopter, chatting with the guys from Rooster Teeth (creators of the Halo machinima series Red Vs Blue and more), crashing the Final Fantasy XIII-2 launch party at a hip Times Square club and drinking shots until laaaate, and not forgetting
Adam Jensen/Deus Ex cosplayers who came to the Square Enix stand; in fact, the standard and dedication of the costumes at NYCC was amazing, and there’s photo sets showing a whole bunch of them
here at 1UP’s site.
