Psalm 17

"Hide me under the shadow of your wings"

Last night my son noticed an elderly lady huddled in a parking lot with her duffel bag. She appeared to be a street person. My wife and I brought her soup and sandwich; my son contributed some high tech socks to keep her feet warm. We brought her to a dumpy motel that had put her on a "do not rent to" list.

I usually succeed in acting like a proper Englishman, but once I failed and ended up helping someone preach to the homeless in a park. The Gospel reading was when Jesus was suffering and all the uncaring people walked by not helping and some even mocking him. It is easy to think that if I were alive in Jesus' day, I would not have been a part of the crowd that ignored Jesus plight. If we ignore the plight of the suffering today, in all probability we would have also ignored the plight of the suffering if we lived in Jesus' day.

Humanity has always prayed "hide me under the shadow of your wings". The prayer can only be answered when some are willing to become God's wings under which others can hide.
