Aahhhh Crap!!
Why is it that AOL's much vaunted spam filters let me receive approximately 12 to 20 emails a day that are offers of all kinds that are certainly unsolicited and unwanted, but the email verification for livejournal went right to the spam file. Frustrating but at least I finally figured what was happening.
