New Definition for Disorderly Conduct

Apparently, turning in an essay for a creative writing class which disturbs your teacher is now disorderly conduct. The overreaction to Virginia Tech continues.

Government officials want to be seen to be "Doing Something." They put little thought into what that "Something" ought to be. But it's better than doing "Nothing", right?

As a teacher I get so many flavors of uncomfortable when I see the paranoia impinging on schools.

I sit there and think, is it really so unusual to have homicidal ideation concerning, eg, your principal? But then I don't say that. Because maybe it is.

More importantly, doesn't it make more sense to talk to the parents, refer the kid to a school counselor (if they have one who's worth squat), or talk to the kid? Going from creative writing assignment directly to arrest is an enormous leap for something that isn't explicitly threatening.

But common sense, it isn't common. Sadly.
