Dawn of War: Dark Crusade

Dark Crusade, the latest expansion for Dawn of War came out recently. ProjectTracker, wwilliam47, and I hung out with some friends and played it. Actually, Bill was watching, not playing. That's because he's a loser. :P

It's a good expansion to a good game. For those familiar with the Warhammer 40K universe, they've added the Necron and Tau as playable races (so, the playable races are: Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Chaos Marines, Orks, Eldar, Tau, and Necron). The single player campaign is a lot of fun. It hearkens back to the old Dune 2 days by having a map of a world where you select which territory you want to invade. The computer will also invade your territory. Some of the battles are scripted and have alternate victory conditions (though eliminating all of your enemies always wins).

Multi-player is also fun, especially co-op. We'll need to work our way up to the 3 on 5 that we tried, though. The computer is very good at massing 3+ players' worth of troops in one of your bases. This is interesting because overall the AI is 'dumber' than in the last expansion. I can handle 2 computer opponents when solo. But with a 3v5, we regularly had one person get overwhelmed, starting the avalanche. I blame my lack of skills and the lack of maps designed for 3v5 - it's difficult to support your teammates before it is too late on all of the maps we tried.

Oh, yeah. Panda Inn still makes good food. Five of us packed away 6 dishes there, resulting in a lot of full bellies. :D

Now, a list of things I've learned by playing Dawn of War:
  • Cowards Die in Shame!
  • Heresy grows from idleness.
  • Fear denies faith.
  • A moment of laxity spawns a lifetime of heresy.
  • Walk softly...and carry a big gun.
  • There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.
  • Knowledge is power, hide it well.
  • Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
  • An open mind is like a fortress with its gate unbarred and unguarded.
  • Faith is purest when it is unquestioning.
  • Bless the mind too small for doubt.

I like a good dystopia. :)
