I've been expecting this ever since I heard about what MS was doing in Vista:

"Microsoft is working to hamstring software companies trying to overcome "inherent weaknesses" in Windows security, rival McAfee Inc. charged in a full-page ad in Monday's Financial Times."

In my experience, Norton (who is also making a fuss, though the article doesn't mention it) and McAfee are more likely to be the problem than the solution. I would rather run without security software than run theirs. I know for a fact that Norton can (from its automatic updates) get into a state where you have to enter safe mode to uninstall it. McAfee interferes with running a debugger on your computer, making programming with it nearly impossible. Both of them will screw up network traffic, especially email clients.

I've criticized MS a lot, but in this instance they are trying to block some seriously buggy security software from screwing up machines. Maybe this isn't the best solution, but it can't be worse than letting anyone hook into the kernel...

EDIT: Here's the actual ad placed by McAfee.
