Resistance is set in an alternate Europe in the early '50s. Imagine if WW2 never happened but a horde of mutant critters instead swept out of Russia. That's the setup for the game.
The game is an old school FPS, complete with a hit point bar, healing potions, lots of guns, and having to look in ever nook and cranny for loot. The story is told by voice over by one of the characters in the game. She has imperfect information about our main character, so what she says is often much more vague than what you learn in the course of playing through the game. Also, throughout the game you can find intelligence packets. These have more information about what is going on in the game, often couched in entertaining ways (anti-war propaganda, orders to avoid scaring the men by telling them the truth, etc.)
Resistance is also visually impressive has some very clever weapons. The Bullseye lets you tag opponents and then its regular shots will track to the tag. The Auger lets you fire through cover (and, yes, the aiming reticule turns red for it through cover, so you can shoot quite effectively through a solid wall) - this is balanced by the rounds slowing down and burrowing to give you time to dodge. The Hailstorm lets you fire the remaining shots in your magazine to form what is effectively a stationary turret in the air. These sorts of guns really change the battlefield and let you deal with what would be nearly impossible situations without them. I'd say that it's the clever guns that really differentiate the game from being just another Doom clone.
Just to return to this, the game has lots of guns. On the first play through, you get 8 different guns. After you complete the game, you get access to yet more guns (5 new guns according to FAQs). I'm not convinced that the game needs or wants other weapons, but I do like the idea of a flamethrower (yeah, there's a shocker). I may play through it again at some point to check out the new toys. Then again, I may not. I borrowed it from a coworker, so I should get it back to him.
resistance fall of man,
