If I don't look, it'll stay away

~  A hurricane meeting two other weather systems, creating a storm the likes of which the East Coast has not seen since 1938?  Please don't, weather gods.

On that front, I need to get more batteries, matches, and another gallon of bottled water, but think I'm ready otherwise.  *knocks on wood*  The MARC train service has already sent out warnings, and the office has sent out emails about taking advantage of ad hoc telework agreements.

+  After running errands this morning, I spent the afternoon volunteering.  What did I do?  Manipulated spreadsheets to get data for the NP's annual report.  That doesn't sound like fun, but it's the kind of thing I'm good at, and I'm much more productive at that than I ever was at the financial side of being a board member so I think everyone is pleased in the end.

Had a drink with the director afterward -- she'd asked me for coffee but we each got something cold at the cafe on the corner.  I was expecting her to either ask for something or tell me she was leaving the organization.  (Why would she feel the need to tell me?  Maybe I was president of the board when she was hired; she and her husband stayed at my house when they came for the interview, and she always introduces me that way.)  She's not leaving...but she did ask me for a donation, really a pledge for a donation over a period of years, which I'm okay with.

+  Stopped for lunch at that same cafe before going in to volunteer:  pumpkin latte made with real pumpkin rather than syrup, which was excellent, veggie wrap, and a salted caramel sugar cookie.  The cookie was INSANELY good but not as good as their banana walnut cookie.

:(  My reading is down significantly lately for a variety of reasons.  But I read and loved Sean Kennedy's Tigerland.  At some point I'll post the review that's half-written in my notebook.

~  I didn't *love* the sauna after the gym.  It felt good while I was relaxing in the sauna but took much too long to cool down afterward, so I felt overheated in my street clothes as I hurried to catch the train.

~  It's early but I'm working on a gift wishlist.  Items:  new towels?  (I have some that are ancient and somewhat threadbare that probably should be reduced to rags for cleaning.)  And maybe an arm band thing so I can wear my iPod at the gym?  (I sit it in the cup on the bike or treadmill but take it back to the locker room for the very brief arm and ab work I do on the machines.)

~  Mad Men: Season 1 has been in my Netflix queue forever.  A friend recommended it, and I really like the visual presentation/design.  The office & home life politics are objectively interesting but also infuriating.  Mostly, I don't get the appeal of Don Draper as a character or Jon Hamm as an actor.  I mean, he's a good actor but I don't get the drooling that seems to go on about him.  *shrugs*

+  Check out this review/rating of milk chocolate by a site related to Cook's Illustrated.

yam, stuff to watch, apropos of nothing, oh life it's bigger, *shrug*, stuff to eat, home stuff
