free cone day redux

I was thwarted in my attempts to get free ice cream from Ben & Jerry's today, as everybody in Singapore also had the same idea. The queue wrapped all the way around the basement of Raffles City, at least an hour's wait for one small scoop of ice cream. Feh. I was tempted, but I've got too much shit to do to hang around in line for that long.

Every time there's a Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's, I'm all exited and happy for about five seconds - then I remember the lines, say "fuck it", and get a pint and a box of waffle cones on the way home from work. My time is money, too, so I figure I still come out ahead.

Exactly. What was funny was that the actual Ben & Jerry's seating area was nearly empty, since everyone was lined up for the free stuff, although I did notice a few people there who thought the same as you do, and just plunked down their money rather than standing in a queue for an hour.

I have actually never lived in a place with a Ben and Jerry's store so have never had the chance to partake of their Free Cone Day. It's just as well -- I'd probably forget it was happening until the next day when everyone else told me about it.

Plus, if the crowds were anything like I experienced, you might just get frustrated and leave, like I did.

Besides, I can always get a pint of the stuff if I want to at the supermarket. Though the last times I've had ice cream of any kind, it upset my stomach terribly. I may be lactose-intolerant now, so it's probably best to just skip the ice cream anyway.

That happened to a friend of ours. She used to be a huge ice cream hog and then became lactose intolerant and had to stop eating it (she's also Polish/Italian and as an adult has become allergic to both potatoes and tomatoes).

It happened to my best friend in college too (which is why I could recognize the symptoms, instead of wondering why ice cream was giving me the shits).

Food allergies are a big problem. It was noticeable when I was a kid, but it seems to be an epidemic now.

Oh dear. Maybe you should have tried Great World City?

Maybe so. Where is that?

Kim Seng Road, about a block up from River Valley Road and two or three blocks before Zouk. I was thinking that the Ben & Jerry's there (which is the only other one I'm familiar with) might have been less crowded than the one at Raffles City.

I haven't been there, but yeah, it was undoubtedly less crowded than RC.

Oh well, maybe next year. :)
