six things make a post

1. Ted Chiang's "The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate" has won the Nebula Award in the Novelette category (full results here). Yay Ted! My review of the SubPress hardcover edition should be coming out next month from IRoSF.

2. Gavin notes that if you want a hardcover version of John Kessel's The Baum Plan for Financial Independence and Other Stories (and you know you do), you'd do well do order a copy sharpish, as Small Beer's distributor is running out of copies. Don't miss out on the chance to see and own for yourself the amazing! reversable! technicolor! dustjacket! of awesomeness!

3. While driving around this evening, I thankfully came across The Word on the BBC World Service. Tonight's show includes an interview with Salman Rushdie about his new novel The Enchantress of Florence, as well as discussions of footnotes in fiction, euphemisms, and hardcover vs. paperback editions of books. The show is listenable on The Word website, although I notice that it's not listed among the BBC's podcasts, which seems a terrible oversight.

4. Sean Carman at the HOBART blog writes about The Solace of Bookstores. Word. Every time I visit a new city, I try to keep an eye out for the bookstores; it's almost a sickness. Though I've been fairly good about keeping my purchases down (books add a lot of weight on plane flights). Still, just browsing makes me feel at home.

5. The Southern Writers Network, a groupblog started by two of my fellow candidates in the NCSU creative writing program, Louisa Jones and Lisa Morgan. Some good posts, and I appreciate the comments made of "Carrying America's Shadow" by David Payne. Check it out.

6. Venerable Thubten Chodron will be speaking at Gonzaga University about the roots of violence. If anyone living in the Washington (State) area is interested in going, I can't recommend her teachings and lectures enough. You lucky people.
