singapore observations: a running series

18. At nearly any car park in the country, the cars are backed into the spaces; the only exceptions seem to be those tights spots which are incredibly difficult to navigate and which require a front-first approach. I'm curious as to the point at which this became the norm, or if it was the case ever since automobiles arrived on the island. It makes ( Read more... )

Mmm, that sweet coffee sounds delicious. I've got evaoprated and condensed milk; I should try making some.

So the Buddha's birthday is this week? Wow. I found the burned page about his birthday last week. Life offers weird coincidences...

Evaporated/condensed milk and coffee or tea - mmm - it's like having Thai Tea every day.

I sure hope you're getting a lot of exercise. High-calorie milk every day is a good way to get huge, fast.

I've been intrigued with Singapore for a while and your blog has helped me move towards trying to get my company (HP) to send me there for a year. Thanks for the dispatches!

You're very welcome! If HP does send you here, let me know and I'll take you around.

No kidding, but I only have it maybe once a week; the rest of the week it's just normal coffee at home with soy milk and brown sugar. I'm also getting lots of exercise; doing much more walking than before and taking advantage of the great public transport system here.

18. Cars are backed into spaces in Australia also. Are you talking about parking car parks or parallel parking in the street?

19. You might want to check what sort of pesticide they use for the mosquitoes in Singapore. In many countries it's DDT. Knowing that, might prompt you to close your doors and windows more quickly, especially since you and Janet are planning to start a family!

21. To me, tea or coffee with sweetened condensed milk sounds positively revolting. I don't like my tea or coffee sweet - even half a teaspoon of sugar completely ruins the taste. If there is no fresh unsweetened milk, I would prefer to drink it black. But each to their own, I guess.

18. Both, but I meant perpendicular spaces in particular. In the US, almost everyone pulls into a space head-first, but it's the opposite here.

19. I do need to check into it. And I just need to set an alarm or something to remind me so it's not a frantic race every time to get the doors and windows shut.

21. My dad's the same way. I like it sweet.

I am picking up a few words here and there; my novel is set on a Singapore-like island that uses Malay as well; I have a revolutionary group who call themselves Api Hijau, because I always thought that Green Fire would make a good name.
