It's memetime! (Snurched from today's Shelf Awareness newsletter)

On nightstand now:

I'm taking a break from The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova and reading Mindfulness in the Marketplace ed. by Allan Hunt Badiner.

Favorite book when you were a child:

Charlotte's Web by E.B. White.

Top five authors:

Right now, it's Jonathan Carroll, Kelly Link, Jeff VanderMeer, Neil Gaiman, and Cherie Priest. But ask me again tomorrow.

Books you've "faked" reading:

I don't think I've ever done this.

Books you are an "evangelist" for:

Outside the Dog Museum by Jonathan Carroll, and City of Saints and Madmen by Jeff VanderMeer

Book you've bought for the cover:

Snake Agent by Liz Williams, cover art by Jon Foster.

Book that changed your life:

You Shall Know Our Velocity! by Dave Eggers. A lot of people dump on Eggers, but this book opened up my eyes as to what the English language can really do in a fictional narrative.

Favorite line(s) from a book:

Not my absolute favorite, because my memory is horrible and I can't recall for shit, but I like this one, from the aforementioned Mr Eggers, because I can totally relate:

"I tried to nap, but now my head was alive, was a toddler in a room full of new guests. It jumped and squealed and threw the books off the shelves ... My mind, I know, I can prove, hovers on hummingbird wings. It hovers and churns. And when it's operating at full thrust, the churning does not stop. The machines do not rest, the systems rarely cool. And while I can forget anything of any importance -- this is why people tell me secrets -- my mind has an uncanny knack for organization when it comes to pain. Nothing tormenting is lost, never even diminished in color or intensity or quality of sound. These were filed near the front."

Book you most want to read again for the first time:

Outside the Dog Museum, because there's such a sense of wonder about this book that is diminished ever-so-slightly upon repeated reads.

What is your favorite genre:

Literature of the fantastic.
