Yes, I'm a New Englander.
The trees which just weeks ago were vibrant and bright had turned grey, holding only a few last dry brown leaves on seemingly-lifeless branches. Some skeletal trees had lost even these, and were stark and dark, empty.
But we have snow. The once-grey branches are now lined in heavy wet white snow. Under its weight the trees yearn for the lake.
Some members of our church flee for Florida when the temperature drops. But I'll take shoveling walkways and unburying cars, snug blankets and warm dogs against the chill. And while I await the coming of the lake ice, I'll appreciate my yearning trees.
