How depressing it all is, vast swaths of red representing not just a difference of opinion, but a sea change from four years ago: all of those people motivated largely, if you believe the polls, by fear.
In Florida and in many other states, fear of terrorism was the top issue among supporters of the current administration. Not that I believe our current policies somehow keep us more secure, but it seems that others do. And no matter the outcome of Ohio's provisional ballot count, a very large number of Americans flocked to the polls on Tuesday and voted their fear.
I think this fear is a measure of our brokenness.
Healthy people vote in love, not in fear. People in healthy societies vote for their personal vision of justice and truth, not because they are terrified that if they vote otherwise the world will fall and chaos will be loosed on the land. Fear, not hatred, may very well be the antithesis of love.
I don't know all of the answers to our society's problems, but I do know that America's people are hurting. And I see that I have a choice -- that we all have a choice. We can feed the devisiveness, the defensiveness, the fear. Or we can choose to reject these things, and to begin to heal that which is broken.
What should be done then, my friends? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.
