I make a lot of lists, mostly to-do lists. I rarely do all the things on these lists, but I enjoy making them. Ariane recently asked me to make a list of the top five bearded/mustachioed historical figures. This was my answer:
-Top 5 bearded our mustached historical figures:
1. General Ambrose E. Burnsides who famously declared, "They may take Fredericksburgh but they shall never take my sideburns!"
2. Abraham Lincoln who did more to elevate the reputation of the beard than any other.
3. Teddy Roosevelt-See Lincoln, but change beard to mustache
4. Frederick Douglas-As an escaped slave he worked feverishly for abolition to help provide slaves with all kinds of freedom. In particular he was a walking demonstration of the freedom to beard.
5. Charlie Chapman-For providing a positive example of the short mustache even though Hitler did everything he could to sully its reputation.
honorable mention-Charles Darwin (great beard)
Also, greatest beard enemy, Peter the Great of Russia, actually forced his noblemen to shave, going as far as to carry scissors with him. Bastard!
Please post some suggestions for lists to make and I will honor them.
