Mussina became the first visiting starter to not allow a run at Rangers Ballpark since last August. He has allowed two runs or fewer in seven of his last eight starts, and he earned his 15th victory, tying Cleveland’s Cliff Lee for the American League lead.
But there is a reason the Yankees had agreed to pay him. Mussina has a track record of excellence that puts him in the discussion for the Hall of Fame. Free of the nagging injuries that bothered him last year, he has outlasted all the young starters who seemed poised to replace him.
