Rose is a very lucky woman--although it is, to some degree, recompense for her suffering. (I'm in a mellow mood tonight--and we didn't even go out for beer and sushi!)

I also love that, though she's trying, she hasn't magically and instantaneously conquered her (completely understandable, albeit irrational) insecurity.
It's totally, 100% irrational--but I honestly can't think of Rose handling it any other way; it's the last lingering effect of School Reunion. As well, Rose is so fiercely protective--and possessive, really--of Peter, that she'd have a hard time sharing him. Enh, she's young, still--and she *does* get over it.
It made it all the better for me - I started grinning like a giddy idiot as soon as I read this line.
Yay! I can imagine him stealing glances over at Rose as he drives, wondering if she's worked it out, worrying that she'll work it out immediately and ruin the surprise of it...
It is so moving, how deeply he appreciates the good, the warmth, the love that is in his life now.
He's this poor, abused soul who somehow has come out stronger and more appreciative of good things, instead of bitter and bent. Peter's resilient--and he knows exactly how good he has it, because he's experienced love at its worst.
*falls out of chair and DIES completely*
I'm almost hesitant to say this--but those lines (Wee, sleekit, tim'rous beastie) always make me think of your line in UtRD, about him being a freckled stalking Scottish panther.
