Title: Kurt | Blackbird
Fandom: Glee
Characters/Ship: Basically a character study on Kurt, with Kurt/Blaine and Burt/Kurt father/son moments sprinkled in :)
Spoilers: up to s02 ep 12 "Silly Love Songs." And apparently the song may be considered a spoiler for s02 ep 16, though it's unverified. I didn’t know this when I started this vid, I swear! Confirmed this song was in episode 16, Original Song, though not this exact arrangement. They used the original arrangement.
Song: Blackbird
Written by: Paul McCartney
Performed by: Evan Rachel Wood
Disclaimer: Glee © Fox Productions
Program Used: Sony Vegas Pro 9
Description: I originally chose this song because I thought this arrangement was pretty and I felt that the lyrics called out to Kurt. Then I read a little on the history of the song; how
Paul McCartney wrote it in 1968 in response to the civil rights movement occurring in the US at the time. A year later after the song was written, the
renewed vigor of Gay Liberation movement began with the Stonewall Riots. For me, just as this song fit the Civil Rights Movement, it can speak to the Gay Rights battle as well, which can connect it to Glee and Kurt. Though Kurt's story was more of a personal journey rather than a larger social one, the song can tie into the aggressive bullying Kurt endured that forced him out of McKinley High and into Dalton Academy; he needed to leave McKinley High to emotionally recover from the situation he endured and his time at Dalton provided a safe haven for him, but once he does recover, he will be able to return, stronger than before.
And since the show also beat us over the head with the canary metaphor, meaning that Kurt is the bird in the gilded cage waiting for his time to break free once more. I included some of the metaphor in the video but not the entire thing; as Blaine says of the canary, he's molting, growing a new coat of feathers so his body has to shut down for a while but don't worry about it; he's got food, water, seems to like his cage, but he will be singing again soon. Just as Kurt is the canary in the metaphor, Kurt is the Blackbird of the song.
….When I chose this song, I didn’t realize that this song really was going to appear in the show and be sung by Kurt of all people (assuming the spoilers are true). It just makes the song fit Kurt much more than I originally thought :) Guess I have a telepathic link to the writers ;)
Blackbird
Singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
