For a moment there, I wasn't sure how it was going to end. :) Is Roberta Van DeKamp the same Van DeKamp that William got sent to? Because I thought she was talking about William at one point.
I love the ending. I love the idea that perhaps the mystery of the mountain had done something for them. Finally given them something to make up for all that they've lost all those years - one has to have hope, right? ;) I also like that they stayed, because that's a nice picture. To see them out of the cold. Takes me back to that feeling the first time I saw IWTB and saw the boat.
In the previous chapter, I actually thought they were hovering between life and death in a way. Their experience was not that different than the epiphany Scully had in all things. That she has to accept the possibility that her cancer might return, but that she has to go on living. And Mulder has to learn how to forgive, and not live in the past any longer in order for them to move forward. In a sense, it's only when they decide to let go of the past that their wish was granted to them.
That was what I got out of it anyway. :) Thank you for this wonderful journey. It's such a great reminder of why XF fics are always so much better.
Thanks so much for this comment -- I am so, so glad that you enjoyed this piece and that this is what you got out of it (because this is always what I got out of the show, and it's what I got out of IWTB).
Agreed about Hawaii (I love that the movie ended that way - sigh.) Also have friends who live in Hawaii, and apparently they LOVE it. So. Yeah. It really only makes me jealous. Beyond this, I thought of it as part of the gift Mulder and Scully "offered" Pele in exchange for their wish, Mulder and Scully will always be people who watch over others and the land around them. :)
And good catch with the Van DeKamp. I searched far and wide on the net for the correct first name of William's adoptive mother, but yes. She was talking about William. Scully's nose began to bleed for the same reason Father Joe's did in the movie. If that helps at all. :)
Thank you again for reading and I am so, so glad you enjoyed!!

Ohhhhh. Suddenly, it all makes sense! Brilliant! :)
I hope the film will continue to inspire you to write more. ;) Hell, even if you're just reposting your old fics, I'd be happy.

Again, I am so glad you enjoyed it. It was fun to write and I did try to make it a little twisty-turny, so I'm glad that aspect came through as well.
I'll be pulling some stuff over to this LJ in the next few weeks. It's not a lot, but I'll house it here nonetheless.
Thank you so much! :)
