Went to a fun party yesterday, ate good food, most of which was bad for me. Saw the Avengers trailer and the Madonna halftime show and Kelly Clarkson singing the national anthem and Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert singing God Bless America and the season premiere of The Voice and really all of that was good enough for me.
I'm really excited that so many other people will be watching The Voice with me this season! After seeing that first episode I'm even more annoyed, in retrospect, with The X-Factor and even less interested in bothering with American Idol.
I had said as a comment to someone else's entry that I was bringing beverages to the party I attended and they asked for recipes, so here they are.
Basic simple syrup
1c water
1c sugar
Swirl pan to dissolve most of the sugar in the water. Bring to a boil and simmer for five minutes. Cool. Makes 1 c syrup.
Variations--add these ingredients and boil with the water and sugar, then strain:
Mint: 1 c fresh mint
Ginger: about 1" fresh ginger, chopped
Blood orange: 2-3 blood orange halves that have been juiced (save the juice for other uses)
Mint limeade base:
1c lime juice
3/4 c mint simple syrup
Ginger lemonade base:
1c lemon juice
3/4 c ginger simple syrup
Combine bases with seltzer or water, to your taste. I often end up with a little more than half seltzer in my glass.
The juice is great in a blood orange margarita: about 1/2c juice, 1 shot tequila, 1/2 shot triple sec, shake over ice, squirt of lime juice. I like blood orange syrup in seltzer, sometimes along with some gin.
