So I got into the open beta at
Archive of Our Own (I signed myself up on opening day) and I have now got all but one of my fics posted, after a couple of days of effort. (EWFS will get a massive repost early in 2010.) Obviously it's really speedy thanks to their totally awesome upload from url feature-all I've had to do is clean up the headers.
You can see all my fics here. A few thoughts:
- It is exciting beyond belief to have one place to put everything.
- That said, I decided not to post some things, such as a few rather old HP gift fics because they're very meta and not within the HP post-GoF AR that I've built. Nor am I posting my Rymon side-fic from lillijulianne's 80s AU because I rather doubt she'd post her story there, so it similarly would make no sense.
- HP fandom ultimately defaulted "underage" to under 16, which is the age of consent in the UK. AO3 defaults "underage" to under 18, so I had to label a few more of my fics as "underage." But I've decided to only label the explicit/NC17 stuff, not the R-rated.
- AO3 doesn't have a "chapter 0" or "prologue" option. I've decided to just renumber the chapters of A Dream that Could Not Last and will do the same with EWFS.
- AO3 also doesn't allow embedding currently, so I've changed all the embedded songs in Keep Your Enemies Closer into links that open in a new window. I've done the same with the songs in A Dream That Could Not Last and Radio Friendly. Clearly American Idol historical AUs require soundtracks!
- The folks at AO3 were really fast to fix the bug that was stalling the automatic uploads at emdashes and the like, which makes me very optimistic. The other issues-well, that's what an open beta is for, to find the issues.
- Unlike fics on LJ, when you're browsing AO3 you can only see the summary and pairings/characters but not the notes. For the historical AUs I've moved their premise from the notes into the summary, and may move some details for some other fics as well. I do wish that in this view you could see when a fic was part of a series.
Uploading is a good thing to do when the writing just isn't coming. Come on muse, I have a
reel_idol and a Yuletide fic to finish in December!
