hey gang, let's reclaim some shit!

Nov 24, 2009 09:28

A while back I did an anti-grammar pet peeve post where we all admitted our frequent grammar errors, and it was a snark free zone. I've inadvertently seen a good bit of ranting about things lately, and that always makes me sort of annoyed and want to fight back with THINGS THAT I LOVE.

So: What are the things that people frequently rant about ( Read more... )

People refuse to read first person pov? That's weird. It's one of those things where I tend to think I prefer third, but I'd never turn down first just for being first, and there are plenty of books I love that have it. (You know, I'll bet people probably mentally translate it into third in their memory if they have something against it.)

I also love established relationship stories. But then, I love watching people work on relationships through time. Perhaps because IRL that's pretty much what I want. I don't really dream about finding a new and exciting love, I think of how great it would be to have been married for years.

I will always love the sitcom. In fact, sitcoms are in some ways my version of comfort food. I've been known to run whole episodes of I Love Lucy, for instance, in my head if I'm bored and can't do anything about it!

I will try to think of my things to reclaim...

People very much refuse to read first person. Or at least, and this is the thing I have to keep reminding myself about online speech, people who refuse to read first person are very loud about it.

Didn't you know that the only reason you and I like established relationship stories is because we're not in one and therefore we romanticize it?

Also, didn't you know that everyone hates sitcoms?

Yes, both of the above have been said to me, and not even by strangers on the internet-by friends, in person.

I suppose the person who's in an established relationship and likes to read first-time falling in love or stories or stories about single people isn't romanticizing at all, though. Who knew that romance stories were not about romance?

But I am totally not surprised all of those things have been said.

lol sarcasm.

There are these things I'm realizing more and more, better ways to negotiate spaces. Like, that the people who scream and yell about a thing are just the few who care SO MUCH and not really many people. Also that groups spend a lot of time reinforcing themselves, and that some people are members of groups just because that's where the action is. Also that when a phrase starts with "everyone knows that" it's a lie. Everyone does not know. Everyone does not in fact agree, at all.

It is one of my major life goals to one day own the entirety of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. And then mainline it all LIKE A CRAZY PERSON.

For a long time I felt like I went through stages with it where by the time I could truly appreciate it, it was no longer easily available to me, and then I just wasn't thinking about it. And every once in a while I would remember and go GOD I WOULD SO ENJOY THE SHIT OF MTM EVEN MORE NOW.

And then one day I confirmed it when the entire first season was up on Hulu and I rewatched it all.

In conclusion, I love the Mary Tyler Moore Show a lot. Also almost all of the other sitcoms you mentioned because I grew up watching them on Nick-at-Nite and though I do not really seek out sitcoms now, those shows are the reason I would never discount the genre!

1. I love MTM

2. Have you watched the Dick Van Dyke show? I am not sure how you would like it as it is very different, but is VERY GOOD.

3. Yay for seasons 2&3 on hulu and season 5 on DVD!

I don't even have a favorite MTM character because I adore them all so much.

I've seen a fair few selections of The Honeymooners and WKRP in Cicinnati, but have never consistently watched them. All the rest of the shows listed I have watched the complete runs of multiple times (or at least every episode they aired on Nick-at-Nite?) and pretty much still never change the channel when an episode is on ( ... )

I am in need of comfort fic today and so therefore, I will be writing domesticity porn.

ETA: I forgot to say OMG I love Sally, and I also love Rose Marie who was on Hollywood Squares all the time when I was a kid. You know that episode about the late night talk show host who loves to have Sally as a guest? That was Rose Marie in real life-she was also always on Merv Griffin. And she kept wearing that bow in her hair even when she was quite elderly. ♥ her!

I don't even know if I've read much of it! So much present tense is first or second. This is a very cool thing!

I think a lot of people like the rush of first-time. I like the problem-solving of ER myself.

I see what you mean about fanfic. The times when I have written first person fanfic are when the character is such a strong personality that they demand to tell the story-basically, Ryan. Occasionally Simon. It took me a while to work out how to get that across in third person, but the Rymon fics are all definitely from one or the other POV.

Dude, I'm in need of comfort. I'm writing some super domestic fic man.

I assume you read through Anne of the Island, where they get engaged in the end?

Anne of Windy Poplars is great because it's much more like Anne of Green Gables in that it's about Anne meeting and then helping all these interesting people, and less about Anne herself. I highly recommend Anne's House O'Dreams, where they are newlyweds. It is my favorite of the six Anne books. Also, if you read it then you can read the AWESOME fic I got last year for Yuletide. The next three-Anne of Ingleside, Rainbow Valley and Rilla of Ingleside-are more about the kids, but if you read them then you can read the AWESOME Canadians in WWII fic someone ELSE got for Yuletide. And they are all avail on Project Gutenberg!

Um, yeah, so I love Anne? Anne and Harriet Vane are why I went to college; growing up the only women I knew who went to college were my teachers. Anne and Harriet made it seem more possible.
