First, I was lucky enough to be able to tag along with
bhanesidhe,
ali_wildgoose, and
piratecore, who are actual Women in Comics, to Drink and Draw Like a Lady, where I saw
goraina and
marionv and a bunch of other folks I know through Ali. Much fun, and thanks so much to the ladies for welcoming a gal who literally cannot draw a straight line!*
Saturday Val and I went into the Art Show itself, and after a wait that should have been longer (we were running late) we got in and had time to do a good circuit around the room before the Comics Bakery panel. Raina gave us
postcards for Smile, and the panel, which I dubbed "how we became the ABBA of indie comics" was pretty awesome. I discovered that the three things that will pull me into a table like a magnet, despite my general shyness, are really good Victorian art; music themes; and, well, black folks. To that end I got cards from a bunch of folks I've been looking up online since getting back home.
I purchased
Side A, a compilation of comics about music-dig that Doc Hopper sticker on the cover! I'm pretty certain just flipping through it that the recently released and more extensive
Side B will be on my birthday wish list. (Can I just say how indie and music snob it is to have more side b than side a? Love it!) I also bought a t-shirt that says
My Favorite Band Doesn't Exist Anymore, while Val purchased Enjoy Comics (sadly sold out, but
Poseur Ink has lots more great tshirts).
I also was inspired by
a Rabid Rabbit comic I ultimately didn't buy (because I don't love The White Album that much, though seeing that John and Marion are in it, I probably should have!) to think about writing something based on a beloved album. I'll have to think on that one more, though.
I was pretty much done by 4pm on Saturday, so I was able to avoid all the heat of Sunday, and instead was home for a surprise lunch with my friend Jeremy. All in all, a great weekend!
*This was proven when I was attempting to sketch the layout of my current apartment for Ali, and she said, "oh, it has a curved wall?" and I said, "no. I just can't draw a straight line." and she said, "ah." However, I can sing and dance! and cook! and drive a stick shift!
