Teaser Tuesday (on a Wednesday)

Jun 29, 2011 18:03

Hello guys! Sorry for not posting this on a Tuesday, but I was busy yesterday (read: the bf introduced me to Bioshock). But here I am!
The teaser I'm going to be posting is just a super short piece, about 300 words, but I think it tells a lot about the mood for the story. And, there's no spoilers, so if you're reading this from the distant future, and the story has been published, don't worry. :)

TRIGGER WARNING: child abuse / domestic violence

I didn’t know how it happened; I was so careful and deliberate with my movements. But mum had awoken. Once I was back in my room, towelling off my hair, getting ready to read and wait for my sheets to finish washing, mum had burst in through my door, that angry scowl on her face.

I froze in an instant, the way a deer freezes in front of a car. And like the deer, I was in for a world of pain.

“What,” she started, drawing out the word, as if she thought I was deaf and dumb. “What did I tell you about wetting the bed?”

I looked up at her, silent, unable to move, unable to talk.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” she continued. When she talked to me, she usually didn’t want an answer. She usually just lectured me. “If I had known how retarded you’d be, I would have gotten you aborted.”

Her words cut me.

But she was my mother, and as they say, mother knows best.

“Well, do you have anything to say for yourself?” She placed her hand on her hip, her left foot tapping impatiently against the floor. Her right eyebrow arched high on her small face, hiding itself underneath her dark fringe.

I was stupid. I shouldn’t have talked back, especially not with ‘attitude’, as mum called it. But despite knowing the consequences, I stood up, straightened myself until I was towering over the woman, and said, defiantly, “It’s not my fault.”

“Bullshit it’s not your fault. Whose fault is it, then? Mine? You ungrateful shit.” Her hand was quick. It hit my cheek before I could even register what she had done.

For a small woman, she had a strong hand. She left me reeling in pain, seeing floating specks of light in my eyes, with uncontrollable tears pouring down the right side of my face. My cheek throbbed, felt like it was burning. I let out a groan.

In other news, I wrote my 1k yesterday, and I'm about to get started for tonight. Also, everyone should play Bioshock. It is ridiculously good, and the world-building is just AJLDBHJNASLABH so good. It's creepy and frightening and addictive.
