This review of Watchmen is exactly why I haven't been terribly excited about the movie. I'll refrain from making judgments on the film as a film until I see it, but what made Watchmen so powerful for me was not underwear perverts with complex psychological defects in a paranoid cold war setting, but the intricate structure, dense composition, and rich use of texts outside of the main narrative. All those things are so hard, if not impossible, to move from medium to medium. And without them, even if the movie is amazing, it will be a soulless imitation.
