okay, so smiling at turkish men is out. talking to them is really out. i went on my first solo adventure to the neighborhoods surrounding campus to find postcards. no big deal right? a 10 minute walk through the suburbs to make a simple purchase and then home. i knew the way. but...
i was walking, chilling, whatever and a man shouted to me from a balcony. so i said merhaba (hello), and he says "turkish word, merhaba?"...so to say, "just a hello?". and i said, very curtly, "evet". means yes.
okay, so i'm still walking, and i see him following me. so i walk toward these two old ladies. if someone is going to attack me, it's going to be difficult right? and he keeps following me, and finally catches up sometime near the main road. there are a ton of people around, so i'm not too worried anymore, but then he keeps speaking in turkish...la la la, and i sort of laugh, tell him "turkcheh bimilyourum", i don't speak turkish, and he keeps talking, as if he's doubtful of this. i think he asked me to take him dancing, and all the while i'm still looking for postcards to send to you fuckers.
and he keeps talkings. i ask him if he knows english, he obviously doesn't and goes into this huge story, i guess, about his ma and pa. like i have some idea what he is saying. he could have been saying "i'm going to rape you so much that you will be screaming for death". i dont know.
and he keeps following me, talking. now, i'm not saying he wasn't cute. he was. but come on. what the hell was i supposed to do. i didn't want to pull out my turkish book b/c then i'd be obligated to communicate with him. no way. and we smoked a cigarette and he told me to wait outside of his apartment while he got his cell phone? i don't know. so i waited, b/c i thought, "if he's going to shoot me, it better be point blank, i'm not running like a bitch". but he didn't shoot me. he wrote down his phone number, and i explained that i was an "ongrenge yeditepe", and he said, "oh oh, bye". b/c if you aren't a student here, they own't let oyu in the gate. i was finally thankful for the security.
so, no more smiling, no more merhaba, no more going for walks without a man. this is freaking crazy...
thanks turkey, thanks a lot.
