Daddy Deadest (conclusion)

Savant and Creote had retreated to a shadowed corner of the porch when the paramedics arrived, staying well out of the way. Savant watches now as the ambulance makes its cautious way back up the muddy access road. He's surprised that his father agreed to go to the hospital, but not very much so. Oracle's agents have the knack of persuasion ( Read more... )

Huntress steps outside, sparing little but a dark look for the two. Her expression could curdle milk at a hundred paces.

Savant returns the glare with a tired sigh. "You needn't look as if it were your father I went after."

The Black Canary follows the Huntress out, her own expression more difficult to decipher.

Savant leans on the porch railing, weight resting on his elbows. He doubts that they will just keep walking, but he does not think there is much for him to say at this moment. No matter. Without a doubt, this woman will take up the slack capably.

That there is even a possibility for escape is...intriguing. Or perhaps a trick. Savant remains wary.

"I haven't the faintest idea. As much as I may enjoy the rush of chasing down your target's men, I do not see it as a long-term option and, beyond that, it appears to be an exercise in futility."

"And takin' off to face down good-for-nothin' relatives is more rewardin'?" Zinda shakes her head. "If I had a dime every time I heard that line durin' the war..."

"You find doing good its own reward. It is admirable.

"We do not share such sentiments."

"Oddly enough, striking back when someone goes out of his way to hurt you is quite rewarding." Savant's voice is level. His nails are gouging flesh out of his palms. "But perhaps you're above that sort of thing."

Creote's words remind Savant where he is and he calms. "But yes. I'm afraid we're just not satisfied with the sort of work where the rewards are largely intangible."

Savant watches them go. "Absolutely nothing has turned out as I expected today, Creote," Savant says, slumping against the porch railings.

He recovers himself and brings an arm under Savant's shoulder to help him to the car. He's well familiar with the sort of beating those women can dish out, and can't help but be a little happy he didn't get one this time.

"Perhaps next time, we will have a plan. That works as intended. Successfully.

"...Did that woman just...?"

"I'm sure she did." Savant decides that he doesn't like the idea at this moment. He's down to one person in the world that he gives a damn about and he's not in the mood to have other people making advances.

He practically spills onto the seat as Creote helps him into the car. "We should stop and rest. I'll stay put this time."

He damned sure will.

Creote nods, and returns to the room they were in earlier.

Tomorrow, they'll head back to Gotham and see about this scheme Huntress is doing.

But for now, they just need rest.
