Another scar, just under his chin, a little one. "Her name was Lyra," he had told the press when it happened, but the source was a punch from one of Joker's thugs

When he gets home, there is a small box waiting for him.
It is about the same size as the hatbox he got for Christmas, really, but it has much different contents than that one did. On top of it is a smaller box, about the side of a jeweler's ring box - a little bigger.
On top is a small note: Bruce, You are the hardest man in the world to shop for. I'm glad I've always liked a challenge. -Selina
P.S. I won't be hurt if it turns out horrible.
In the smaller box, there are a pair of silver looking cufflinks. They're engraved with a delicate twisting pattern. In the larger box is a small birthday cake - chocolate.
When he enters the Batmobile, he'll find a white box waiting for him in the passenger seat. It contains a dozen doughnuts, assorted, together with a small note detailing the nutritional value (or lack thereof) of each one.
In the Batcomputer, he will soon find a new video file, about 10 minutes long, showing Dick and Barbara Grayson in the swimming pool in the Clocktower. The audio quality is a little erratic; he can't quite make out what Dick and Babs are saying to each other, but the third person present is Mary Grayson, and he can hear every happy syllable she utters.
He doesn't have a copy, at least not a first printing. Running his fingers across the binding, Bruce does nothing more for a minute or two but enjoy the moment.
He asked Alfred to leave the unassuming package on Bruce's nightstand. Carefully wrapped in protective padding, it will reveal an aging medical textbook. Inside the cover, and scattered throughout, is the handwritten cursive Bruce will instantly recognize as being that of one Thomas Wayne. The accompanying card: "Took me a couple of years and about 1500 bookstores to locate. It was worth every second. --Dick."
Bruce is grateful, damned grateful, Dick had the sense to give this to him where his reaction would be private. The gift is precious. Priceless. His eyes close, his thoughts on the days before birthdays became nothing more than another reminder of what used to be. He thinks of his father, and he hurts.

Bruce turns the cufflinks over in his hand but spends more time regarding the cake. It has homemade written all over it.
Selina baked.
Now that's a present.

'The Valley of Fear', first printing, as mint as something over 90 years old would be.
Yes, Bruce could buy it himself. He may already have a copy. But one great detective deserves another. It is, of course, elementary.
