The Stadion: Atalanta versus Jesse Quick

Aug 17, 2005 20:52

Reluctant to leave her father, Jesse nevertheless moves to the track (trying not to look at anyone) to get ready for the sprinting. She has limited experience with athletics in a formal way, but here...well, she's planning to blaze a trail for Donna's sake.

And her own, truth to tell.

cyborg, starfire, jesse quick, olympics, troia, greek gods, kid flash, nightwing, tempest

Atalanta is just as serious as Jesse. She has been promised restoration of her husband to a human soul instead of one of a lion and for the pair to be reunited in Elysium. She has waited to abate her shame for millenia. Hades is acursed for keeping his brother's arrangement on them both, much less only one of them so that the other remained a beast.

Hades has allowed her a tool in this - one that had allowed her greatest pleasure and greatest pain to come forth. Whatever this one wishes, she will not win.

Jesse does a brisk nod to greet Atalanta, but that's it. No pleasantries. No social niceties. She wants the race over, won, so she can go back to visiting with her father.

She has no idea what she's up against.

The stadion is a short race by both their standards. Once around the stadium. To everyone else, the five mile race will be over before they blink. Not for the speedsters though. Atalanta glances at the prize and wonders what the attraction is, not that it is her concern. Only Melanion matters...

The nymph Minthe explains the rules to the newcommers. Then, she raises her arms. In slow motion they fall to her side. The race is on.

Jesse listens attentively. All she knows is that she'll use Johnny Quick's formula, tap the Speed Force, and wipe the field with the goddess.

Game on.

Up in the stands, a loud yell breaks out.

RIP-OFF!

Next to him, Barry tugs his friend down.

Johnny, be quiet. You'll get us kicked out.

Nightwing swears under his breath.

Dammit...

He makes his way over to her to ensure she's not hurt and crouches down beside her, hand touching her shoulder; though he knows the sting of defeat can do more damage sometimes than physical wounds.

Jesse.

Jesse had lifted her head and nodded to Donna, but the look of misery on her features is profoud. Donna is the one she failed most specifically. "I'm sorry," she whispers to the Amazon before she turns her eyes on Nightwing. In her hand is still clutched the golden apple of desire, and she flicks a small smile at him. "It's okay," she reassures him faintly, presenting the apple. "Look."

He grimaces and pointedly turns his head, pushing her hand aside. The last thing they need right now is to be fighting over some golden apple, and he's determined not to look directly at it. Holding her hand up and away from his line of sight, he looks back at her.

Yeah. It's okay. You did your best, and we can't ask more than that. It's not your fault they're not playing fair.

He shoots a dangerous look towards the stands.

Garth thinks a string of Atlantean curses, careful not to say them out loud. He isn't close with Jesse and decides to let those who are have first shot at comforting her. To the rest of the team he says, "You see what we are facing. Get your minds in order to fight it. Think beyond the immediacy of the contest."

Were he able to stand without excruciating pain, he would pace.

I thought Hades said the competition was going to be unclothed. Why was Jesse's opponent wearing a tunic? Achilles wore a suit to give him an edge and conceal his armor. What about this person? I think we need to insist on nudity from our opponents. Roy, are you going to raise a complaint for the rules violation with Hades?"

Vic strides over to Atalanta. He's been doing a lot of research, himself.

Don't you ever wonder what's it's like to face a challenge honestly?

She understand this new incarnation, even if he does not speak the same tounge. She burns with shame.

In sotto voice...

Forgive me, but my lover suffers as well as your companion, and this was the only way we have had in millenea to ease such trails. Give my saddest apologies to the maiden. Tell her too that desire is equal parts blessing and curse.

With that she runs back towards the back of Hades entourage.
