In Opal City...

May 23, 2005 13:13

The JLA transporter delivers Dinah Lance (in civvies) and her companion (the aforementioned blind black man) to the coordinates Oracle supplied, one assumes where Jack is to be meeting them. The companion, whom one assumes is "OracleBoy", looks like he may need to sit down a moment. Bit...green around the gills, let's say.

shade, black canary, starman jack knight, kip blackwell

The coordinates deposit them in an alley way, around the corner from a small mom and pop style convience store called "Opal City Market" one block from City Hall.

Jack can be seen through the store window inside holding a cardboard tray of coffee cups, with a cardboard box on the counter. He's chatting up the older man behind the counter.

Dinah tugs on Kip's sleeve.

C'mon--I'll introduce ya to the guy with the rod.

Lead on. Just...take it a bit slow, OK?

* Kip smiles at Dinah, clearly amused at his reaction to the teleportation, but he's also trying to get his bearings. *

See, this is why Oracle asked me to be your guide, rather than the Flash. Love the guy, but he's not exactly set to 33-1/3, y'know?

She lets him take her arm, then walks slowly into Opal City Market.

Hey, Jack--I got some Turtles Pez dispensers to sell ya.

Jack's eyes narrow in annoyance.

"yeah well, I'd want to unload those fast if I was you, those are selling like hot cakes."

As the door to the market opens Jack's voice carrying over the sound of an old cash register's bell ringing. Jack had an artists portfolio tube slung over his shoulder.

"Come on, how can you say that she had better legs then Garbo? Seriously, no one ever painted Sandra Dee on the side of their B-52. It was Garbo or Paige that they painted on the nose of their flying fortress. Honestly Skip I think that you've gone senile in your old age. Fortunately, you still brew one of the best cups of coffee in this 'burg." Jack glanced over his shoulder, as he slid a 5$ bill across the counter. "Anyway my morning appointment is here. we'll continue this tomorrow." Jack picked up his tray of coffee's and cardboard box.

"Hey Dinah, figured that Delphi would send you along. I got your favorite, bear claws, freshly made. Hi, you must be Orion. I'd shake your hand, but they're kinda full of coffee and pastries."

Yummy. Good thing I did my workout this morning.

I'll take the coffee and pastries and we'll get a table.

As Dinah gets a table Jack looks Orion over. He reaches out and takes his free hand.
"Hiya, I'm Jack Knight pleased to meet ya. Welcome to The Opal."

* Kip grins, though not entirely steadily. *

I can smell the sugar and cinnamon from here, and I'm sure in like five minutes that'll smell outstanding. For right now, though, just wanna say it's an honor to meet you, sir. Really. I see you got my name, since I forgot to give it. Oracle said I was cool?

* Kid's fast, at least. And he grips Jack's hand firmly; there's muscle behind the handshake. *

"Well Delphi didn't quite say "cool" but your story checked out. Ya look a little under the weather, first time doing the transmat beam shuffle? Don't worry, you'll get used to it. Just think of it like your riding a rollar coaster, with a full bladder after having just eaten a... I'm not helping am I?"

with a big grin on his face Jack says to Dinah
"Silence Turtle Woman!"

I'd tell ya to make me, Rod Boy, but we're in public, and besides, you know I'd kick your ass. And then you'd have Ollie glaring about you when he found out about it.

But anyway ... Orion, Oracle said you'd been working on these shadow thief cases?

* Kip uses the few minutes of banter to collect himself, and during that time his grin spreads wider, cheerier. *

I am, Miss Lance. I've been doing a lot of research into the Shade and I've come to the conclusion that he's not the one doing everything. Someone's trying to make it look like he is for whatever reason...Princess Diana, she said she thinks someone's maybe trying to lure him into the open. I think that's a pretty good idea.

Oracle suggested you both could help. Since I'm new at this gig and you two know the dude.

Dinah, please. My scary green-face partner has to stick with a code name; I don't.

Talked to Diana, huh? Figured she'd get involved, since whoever-it-is hit Gateway like that.

Funny thing about the Shade ... he's not like the rogues we get in Gotham, or the Keyston and Central set. Jack? You know the guy better than I do. Do you think Diana and Orion here are on to something, or has the Shade just gotten sneakier?

"Well it's not him, I know that much I know for sure. He's even got a cop as an alibi." Jack sips from his coffee.

"It's possible that it's a frame up, or an incredible coincidence. Or worse... If someone else has developed powers like his, that could be very bad for a lot of people."
