Watchtower Maintenance

The Justice League's lunar headquarters had taken a real beating during the Sinestro invasion of Earth, and some of the repair work required had been extensive. Fortunately, Green Lantern rings make ideal tools - and a handy way to inspect the results after it's done ( Read more... )

The pair arrive back at the Justice League Watchtower - Hal depositing Nightwing in the main hangar and making sure to stand a good distance away before he drops the bubble around the other crimefighter.

Nightwing's head is hanging, fists clenched, but his color is not as scarlet. He gives Hal a curt nod, nothing more, and keeps breathing in and out as if trying to master his temper. In this respect he is not his mentor: showing his feelings isn't against his religion.

They're not alone. There's a third figure in the shadows.

"You both look as if you've had a long day."

As he steps into the light, they can see a green man dressed in red. Usually, he's not good news.

"Wotan. I think you picked the wrong moment."

Hal's ring flares as he prepares to defend himself and Nightwing.

"Wotan." Nightwing really, really wants someone to thump right now, and as Luthor's unavailable, this guy will fit nicely. His fists ready, the Gothamite snaps, "You wanna explain what the hell you're doing here?"

"I'm sorry, I was under the impression that this was the fabled headquarters of the Justice League of America." Wotan said, smiling. "Heroes, yes? Savers of lives? I have need of such valor. Or does the salvation of the recently deceased not interest 'heroes' anymore?"

Hal's eyes narrow.

"Talk fast, Wotan. But I don't trust you any further than I can throw you."

And Nightwing's fist is paused not far from Wotan's face. "Talk REALLY freaking fast," he echoes Hal in a hiss.

Wotan smirks. "That may work with the superstitious cowardly lot you're used to intimidating in Gotham, but you're playing in a different class now. I'm sure you're aware that over time, due in part to the machinations in the Overworld of Neron, the realm that you colloquially call 'hell' has been cast into certain factions and areas...one of which is the realm I've come to rule.

"Until recently. I'm sure you're both familiar with Roger Romaine."

"Roger Romaine - The Spirit King? He killed Terry Sloan."

He folds his arms across his chest.

"What about him?"

"He has his own piece of hell as well." Wotan said. "And in a just realm, he'd have his little piece of the pie, as would I. But something happened recently that's gotten him a little...what's the vernacular...'froggy'."

Wotan takes a step forward. It's painfully obvious to the heroes that he's not planning to attack, but isn't averse to defense either. "Romaine draws his power through the legions of the dead, the spirits, under his command. Very recently, he's come across a spirit that has given him the boldness to expand his territory."

"Get to the damned point, Wotan," Nightwing advises. No patience, not right now, not with the implications being made.

"Whoever his newest prize is, that fact that he has this particular soul has given him enough credibility as a leader that legions of the damned are now flocking to his side, including those under me. You want the point, pretender? I want it gone. I want *him* gone. And before you even ask, I imagine that whoever this soul is...it has the stench of the just and righteous on him, and it doesn't belong in Hell...and I imagine someone like that pretender Fate could reunite soul with body...or maybe the fallen angel you took in can make sure the soul gets where it belongs." Wotan said.

Nightwing lets go of the breath he didn't even realize he had been holding, relaxing his stance by a degree or two. So many possibilities on who could be the one giving Wotan trouble...but stench of the just and righteous is for certain not Bruce.

"What do you think?" he asks Green Lantern, sighing. "Can't think he," and he jerks his head at Wotan, "would come up here for anything other than selfish reasons like getting someone out of there."

"Oh, make no mistake, that's EXACTLY why I'm here." Wotan said. "That said, do you ignore the obvious implications of whoever it might be that's down there simply because I'm the messenger?" Wotan stared. "Whoever...or whatever...is now giving Romaine the cojones to breach my area of the realm, it's a recent death. And it's someone you've both been around. It's why I came to the League instead of my regular adversaries in the Justice Society...I get the pervading sense that it's one of yours."

On the other hand, that sounds exactly like Bruce to Hal. Well, maybe if you put 'self-' in front of the 'righteous'.

"I'm sure Wotan is being perfectly straightforward about his motivation - wanting more power for him, and less for his rival. I can't say I much care who rules in Hell, and I don't like the idea of leaving a good person there to rot.. especially if it's someone we know."
