Kitchen Raid

Karen Starr.

Kara Zor-L was using that name actively again. Just as she was actively setting up Starrware again. She'd let too much fall to the wayside in recent years, and now that she knew where she was from (and now that there was another Super version of her flying around), Kara needed to do more to give her life meaning. Part of that meant ( Read more... )

mr. terrific, power girl

Michael Holt observes from the side, having scanned through his third newspaper of the morning, mainland China's Renming Ribao.

"You're doing it wrong. You know there's a pumpkin and nutmeg crust pie hidden in the pastry cooler. I'll see how long it takes you to cheat and use your x-rays to find it." He smiles and looks at his watch. "Ten...nine...eight."

Kara pokes her head out from the fridge and glares at Michael. "I never do anything wrong," she says, perhaps a little cockily. "And I wasn't looking for...whatever it is you think I was looking for." She pulls out a carton of - of all things - chocolate milk. "This is what I was looking for." She grins at him as she pours herself a glass. "Good morning, by the way."

"If that's what you'll settle for..." Turning a page, he eyes quickly through an article on a Great Ten intervention. "And the same to you. Early craving?"

Zooom! Zooom! There's a thick slice of pie also sitting in front of Kara now. She grins at Michael. "You should know me by now. I never just settle," she says, digging into the slice. "Something like that," she admits after swallowing. She brings the food over to the table and takes a seat across from Michael. "It's going to be a...busy day at work today. Just...stocking up on all the sweetness I can get right now." She watches him reading his paper. "How've you been?"

"You know, the workload would be cut in half if you sent me over some of your projections." He raises a hand, before going back to his coffee. "Its nothing that's promised, but if I can offer help in any way, by all means. Utilize your resources, that's all."

"Beyond that, I'm uploading a new security function to Thinker this afternoon. There's the off chance that I'll try to deprogram its comebacks as well."

Kara nods. "I'll definitely look into doing that, Michael," Kara says, the appreciation evident in her voice. "Thank you." She chews thoughtfully on a piece of pie before adding, "What kind of security function?"

Someone who's actually interested in a Mr. Terrific explanation? This has to be a mistake.

"Well, I'm glad you asked. I don't think you were with us during the first encounter with them, but Johnny Sorrow loaded Thinker into the Brownstone himself. He'd evolved to not much past a high powered virus, and was used as a secondary assault." Another sip of coffee.

"Very well planned one too. The team was divided, but we still conquered. Thinker, however, was trapped in one of my firewalls, and has been aped since. The faster he adapts, the more code I can kick out to mask or beat him. If he didn't cheat in chess, I'd even play that more often with it."

"So tell me about Starrwear. The buzz is starting to get out to investors that matter."

"Well, for one thing, I'm running it differently than it's been run in the past. For one thing, I'm attempting to make it less about the video games and the fun and more...conscious of the world around it," she says, taking another bite of pie. Rao, it's really good pie. "I mean, there are enough video game companies out there already. What we're about now is finding solutions to the problems of today - specifically ecologically and environmentally speaking. Lots of research, lots of development..." she trails off. This isn't a business pitch. This is a conversation with a friend. But, god, if she hasn't done a ton of business pitches lately just to get Starrware active again. "I'm trying to help the world in a different way, Michael. Power Girl can't do everything, and frankly, I can't always be Power Girl either. I need some semblence of a life outside of that."
